Is Battle Spirits Saga Dead? What Happened, How to Play, and Where to Get Cards in 2026

Launched in April 2023, Battle Spirits Saga is Bandai’s strategic trading card game built around cards and cores. So is it dead? Official development and support for the game ended in March 2025, with no further product releases or official events planned.
The game itself is still playable. You can use the cards you already own, play for free on Board Game Arena, and look for cards on Japanese marketplaces. The goal is simple: use your spirits and cores to reduce your opponent’s life to zero. Meanwhile, the original Japanese Battle Spirits keeps going, with a new set and a new anime in 2026.
Is Battle Spirits Saga Dead or Discontinued? What Happened and What’s Left in 2026

Battle Spirits Saga’s official run is over, but the game isn’t gone. On February 7, 2025, an official Battle Spirits Saga announcement confirmed that official development and support for the game would end in March 2025. The reason given was that current sales performance and market conditions had made continued operations unfeasible.
The final official event, Summoner’s Legacy, was scheduled for March 29, 2025, at the Pasadena Convention Center in California. The same announcement said smaller Summoner’s Legacy events at local game stores would be supported starting March 29, 2025.
No new products or official events were scheduled after March 2025. Limited support, covering rules inquiries, customer support, and tournament kit distribution while supplies lasted, was planned for up to one year, until March 2026. As of October 2026, that window has passed.
| Date | What happened |
| April 2023 | Battle Spirits Saga launches |
| February 7, 2025 | End of official development announced |
| March 2025 | Official development and support end |
| March 29, 2025 | Final event Summoner’s Legacy scheduled, plus local store events |
| Until March 2026 | Limited support planned: rules, customer support, tournament kits |
| October 2026 | No new products or official events scheduled; the game is still playable |
Still, “dead” isn’t the whole story. The official team encouraged players to keep enjoying the game with friends and family. The six Summoner’s Legacy reward cards, one new spirit for each color, were designed to help players keep playing after official support ended. You can still play with your existing cards under the same rules, and you can play online for free.
That shutdown applied to Battle Spirits Saga, not the original Japanese Battle Spirits. The Japanese game is still active and released a new set in October 2026.
What Is Battle Spirits Saga? How the TCG Differs From Japanese Battle Spirits

Battle Spirits Saga and Japanese Battle Spirits are both Bandai card games played with cards and cores, but Saga is a separate game, and Saga decks are built from Saga cards. According to the official Battle Spirits Saga site, the Battle Spirits Saga TCG features original game mechanics designed by Michael Elliott. You build your deck from three card types: spirits, nexuses, and magic. Spirits fight on the field, nexuses stay in play for lasting effects, and magic cards deliver one-time effects.
Cards come in six colors: red, purple, white, yellow, green, and blue. Each color has its own strategy for you to master.
The original Japanese Battle Spirits uses a similar core-based system. Players use clear stones called cores to summon spirits and level them up. The two games are separate products, though. The Battle Spirits Saga Comprehensive Rules specify that a deck consists of 50 to 60 Battle Spirits Saga cards, so make sure you’re buying cards for the game you plan to play.
One name adds to the confusion. Battle Spirits: Saga Brave (バトルスピリッツ サーガブレイヴ) is one of the Japanese Battle Spirits anime series, not the trading card game that launched in 2023.

How to Play Battle Spirits Saga: Setup, Turns, and Combat

A Battle Spirits Saga deck holds 50 to 60 cards with no more than four copies of any one card name, and the official Where to Start guide recommends learning the game with a starter deck. Once you have a deck, these are the four things to learn:
- How to win and set up a game
- The seven steps of a turn
- Paying costs with cores and leveling up spirits
- Attacks, blocks, and flash timing
How to Win and Set Up a Game
You win when your opponent has zero life, or when your opponent has no cards in their deck at the start of their start step. A starter deck has everything you need to set up: a 50-card deck, a play sheet, 30 cores, and one soul core.
- Shuffle your deck.
- Put five cores from the void into your life.
- Put one soul core and three cores into your reserve.
- Draw four cards.
- Use a random method, such as rock-paper-scissors, to decide who goes first.
- Mulligan once, or skip it and draw one extra card.
Each player has only one soul core. The game uses eight areas: the deck area, hand, trash, field, reserve, life area, burst area, and void. You can have only one card set in your burst area at a time.
The Seven Steps of a Turn
Every turn runs through seven steps in order: start, core, draw, refresh, main, attack, and end. The player going first skips the core and attack steps on their first turn.
| Step | What happens |
| Start | You lose if your deck is empty |
| Core | Add one core from the void to your reserve (skipped on the first player’s first turn) |
| Draw | Draw one card |
| Refresh | Refresh your cards and move all cores from your trash to your reserve |
| Main | Summon spirits, place nexuses, use magic, set one burst per turn, move cores |
| Attack | Attack with your spirits or end the step (skipped on the first player’s first turn) |
| End | Your turn ends and your opponent’s turn begins |
Most of your decisions happen in the main step and the attack step. During the refresh step, you refresh your cards and return all cores from your trash to your reserve, making those cores available to spend again.
Paying Costs With Cores and Leveling Up Spirits
You use cores to pay costs, set your spirits’ levels, and track your life. To pay a cost, move that many cores from your field, your reserve, or both into your trash. Each symbol on your field that matches one of a card’s reduction symbols lowers its cost by one, up to the number of reduction symbols printed on the card.
The number of cores on a spirit sets its level. A spirit operates at the highest level it has enough cores to maintain, gaining the BP and effects for that level. When you take damage, cores move from your life to your reserve, giving you more cores to use on later turns.
Attacks, Blocks, and Flash Timing
Battles come down to BP. To attack, exhaust one refreshed spirit on your field, and your opponent can block with one of their own refreshed spirits. Players have a flash window before a block is declared. If a spirit blocks the attack, another flash window opens after the block is declared.
When an attack is blocked, the spirit with lower BP is destroyed. If both spirits have the same BP, both are destroyed. Only unblocked attacks deal damage: your opponent moves one core from their life to their reserve for each symbol on the attacking spirit.
Battle Spirits Saga Online: Free Simulator and Deck Builder Options

As of October 2026, you can play Battle Spirits Saga online for free on Board Game Arena, right in your web browser with no download needed. The game has been available there since June 5, 2024. In its launch announcement, Board Game Arena thanked Bandai for authorizing the game on the platform.
Board Game Arena also lets you build your own deck. To customize a deck, start a solo game first, then take that deck into a two-player match.
For deck building outside Board Game Arena, you can try unofficial tools like bssdb.dev. For rules questions, the official site still offers the Comprehensive Rules on its rules page, and its card database covers every card in the game.
| Option | Best for | Download | Official status |
| Board Game Arena | Free matches with players worldwide | Not required | Authorized by Bandai |
| bssdb.dev | Building and checking decks | Not required | Unofficial |

Battle Spirits Saga Booster Boxes, Starter Decks, and Every Set

Battle Spirits Saga’s retail lineup includes six main booster sets, one Evangelion collaboration booster, and seven starter decks. No new sets are planned. If you’re new, begin with a starter deck, since every starter deck card is exclusive and can’t be found in booster packs.
The main boosters run from BSS01 to BSS06, and each pack contains 12 cards. A booster box holds 24 packs, and BSS01 boxes include a bonus foil box topper. A booster box may make sense if you’re collecting a full set. If you’re looking for specific cards to add to a deck, buying singles may be a better option.
Released on June 14, 2024, CB01 Halo of Awakening was Saga’s first-ever collaboration booster, featuring cards based on Evangelion. The collaboration starter deck ST07 Destined Assault came out a week earlier, on June 7, 2024. To see which cards are in each set, search the official card database.

Battle Spirits in Japan in 2026: New Sets, a New Anime, and a Video Game

The original Japanese Battle Spirits is still active in 2026, with new card releases, a new anime, and a Nintendo Switch 2 release of the video game Battle Spirits Crossover. It marked its 15th anniversary in 2023 and still releases new products today.
A new set, 26RBS03 (絶界の覇者, Zekkai no Hasha), came out on October 17, 2026, and the official Battle Spirits site also lists the anime starter decks 26RSD09 and 26RSD10. A new anime, Battle Spirits [Re] Zekkai no Kū (絶界の空), was announced for fall 2026 and is now airing in Japan.
Battle Spirits Crossover is now available on Nintendo Switch 2. According to Nintendo’s official site, the Switch 2 version was released on October 7, 2026, includes over 1,900 cards, and supports Japanese text and voice only.
If you want to keep up with new Japanese Battle Spirits releases, keep in mind that the cards are in Japanese. Saga players should stick with Saga cards.
Where to Buy Battle Spirits Saga Cards Now

Where you look depends on which game you want. Battle Spirits Saga has no new products scheduled, so you’ll be choosing from existing listings, often secondhand, and it pays to check each item’s condition. Japanese Battle Spirits is still releasing sets in 2026, so you may also find listings for cards from the newest set.
With our Cross Search, you can search listings across Rakuma, Mercari, JDirectItems Auction, and JDirectItems Fleamarket in one place, and English search terms are automatically translated into Japanese. Searching “battle spirits saga” may turn up Saga starter decks, but the results can also include Japanese Battle Spirits cards. For Japanese Battle Spirits, try “バトルスピリッツ カード” or a set code like 26RBS03. Expect fewer listings for Saga than for the Japanese game.
Our team handles communication with sellers for you, and all transactions are in yen. Every purchase includes 45 days of free storage, and we consolidate your items before sending them worldwide. Here’s how ordering works:
- On Neokyo, search “battle spirits saga starter deck” to find Saga cards, or “バトルスピリッツ 26RBS03” to find Japanese Battle Spirits cards.
- Place a buy request, and our team contacts the seller for you.
- Store your purchases for free for up to 45 days, then have them consolidated for shipping.
- Choose a shipping method and receive your order.
As of October 2026, our commission is ¥350 per item plus packaging fees. We don’t add a Neokyo fee to shipping, so you pay the carrier’s actual rate, and your country may charge import or customs fees. English-language customer support is also available while you shop.
Before buying a secondhand item:
- Check the description and photos to see whether the item is sealed or opened, and look for any signs of damage
- Look at the seller’s ratings
- Be careful with listings priced far below similar ones
Prices and stock change often, so check each listing when you’re ready to order. To see what’s available now, start with a Saga search on Neokyo.
