All about the Nintendo 64 system and games

The Nintendo 64 video game system is undoubtedly one of the most influential consoles of the late 1990s. The introduction of the analog stick and the impact this had on first person shooter games like GoldenEye and platformer games like Super Mario 64 brought international recognition to Nintendo’s entry in the fifth generation of home consoles.

However, even in spite of the high quality of the Nintendo 64 and its many innovations, the system disappointed Nintendo when compared to the success of the PlayStation, which was released a year earlier than the Nintendo 64. Despite this, the system is still highly beloved among Nintendo fans and gamers in general, with a library full of classic titles.

History of the Nintendo 64

In the early 1990s, Nintendo was the undisputed leader in the video game industry, thanks in part to its two flagship consoles: the NES and the Super Nintendo. After an aborted partnership with Sony, Nintendo decided to go it alone in designing its new video game system.
At that time, the video game industry was changing: new consoles were turning to CDs as a format for games, which were cheaper and had better memory, leaving the cartridge behind. However, due to the failure of several CD-based consoles, Nintendo decided to keep the cartridge for its Nintendo 64.
This news worried many investors, which caused many delays in the release of the Nintendo 64. Initially announced for 1995, the console was only released in 1996 in Japan, and it was not until 1997 that it arrived in Europe.
Nintendo then suffered from its decision to keep the cartridge as a game support. When the console was first released, it had a catalogue of only three video games: Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 and Saikyō Habu Shōgi.
Third-party video game publishers were reluctant to continue publishing games in cartridge form. As a result, Nintendo and Rare were the only game publishers for a while. They took the opportunity to publish some flagship titles, such as Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, GoldenEye 007, F-Zero X or Banjo-Kazooie.
As for the console, it is particularly well designed: it has a 64 bit system and introduces the analog stick on the controller. This stick became indispensable for all shooting games. It was also the first console to allow the connection of four controllers simultaneously to play multiplayer games.

Nintendo 64 games

Many third-party game publishers did not want to start producing games for the Nintendo 64 and preferred Sony's PlayStation. The architecture of the system and the game medium (the cartridge) made it difficult to produce games. However, Nintendo designed plenty of its own games and, in the long run, the system’s library became particularly expansive.

Among these games, we find classics such as:

  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Smash Bros
  • Mario Kart 64
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Pokémon Stadium
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Diddy Kong Racing
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Lylat Wars
  • Banjo-Kazooie

Buy Nintendo 64 games in Japan

Many Nintendo 64 games were only released in Japan. This is because the system was late arriving in Europe and the US. In fact, the Nintendo 64 arrived in Europe a year before its production was discontinued.
For this reason, many fans of Nintendo 64 games buy their games directly from Japan.
