The Japanese set behind Chaos Rising is the expansion pack “Ninja Spinner” (M4), released March 13, 2026 — the fourth entry in Japan’s Mega Evolution series (the M series), out about two months before the English set. It’s an 83-card main set plus secret rares, with Mega Greninja ex fronting the packaging. Like the English set, its theme is the showdown with Mega Floette ex in Lumiose City.

There are three basic differences to know between the Japanese and English sets.

First, the release gap. Japan runs about two months ahead, so Japanese single prices are already established before the English set even launches.

Second, the card numbering. Japanese cards use 083 as the denominator (e.g. 114/083), English cards use 086 (e.g. 116/086). The denominator is the main-set card count — and as we’ll see, the “83 vs 86” gap is exactly where the two sets differ.

Third, the rarity labels. The same card is called different things in Japan and in English markets. Without the mapping you can’t even search the Japanese market, so check the table in the next section.

Chaos Rising vs Ninja Spinner: What Matches and What Doesn’t

Most of Chaos Rising comes from Ninja Spinner, but the two are not a perfect 1:1 match. Here are the differences, in four parts.

A. Cards You Can Get in Ninja Spinner (Most of the Set)

The vast majority of the set, Mega Evolutions included, has Japanese prints in Ninja Spinner. The only thing to watch is the rarity naming.

English set

Japanese set

MHR (Mega Hyper Rare)

MUR

SIR (Special Illustration Rare)

SAR

UR (Ultra Rare)

SR

IR (Illustration Rare)

AR

For example, the English Mega Greninja ex SIR #116 corresponds to the Japanese 「メガゲッコウガex SAR（114/083）」. On Japanese marketplaces and card shop sites, you need to search with the Japanese labels, not the English rarity names.

The tricky part is that two kinds of confusion coexist: pairs like SIR/SAR where the abbreviations differ but mean the same thing, and pairs like UR/SR where the same abbreviation can mean a different rarity in each market (English sets don’t normally use “SR”, so reading a Japanese SR with English-market instincts leads you astray). Keep this mapping at hand even when browsing Japanese cards on international marketplaces.

Also watch for cards that exist in multiple rarities. The Japanese Special Red Card, for instance, comes in a regular version (072/083) and an SR version (106/083) — it’s the SR version that matches the English UR #113 in look and scarcity.

B. In the English set, this illustration rare was removed from the set and turned into the promo bundled with the Elite Trainer Box (ETB). To be clear: the regular-rarity Fennekin (#011) is in the English main set as usual. Only the illustration rare version is handled differently.

So in English, this illustration rare Fennekin exists only as the ETB promo — while in Japan it comes out of packs and is sold as singles. As acquisition routes go, you can compare the English ETB promo against Japanese singles.

C. Chaos Rising adds three cards that are not in Ninja Spinner.

Mega Gallade ex (#048): A promo card from the “Special Card Set: Mega Gallade ex” released in Japan in January 2026, folded into the English set. In other words, not an “English exclusive” — in Japan, this card was already out earlier as a separate product.

Krookodile ex (#055): The Japanese version is 「ワルビアルex」 (046/M-P), from the “Promo Card Pack Vol. 2” distributed at Pokémon Card Gym events starting November 1, 2025.

Adversity Policy (#074): The Japanese version is 「逆境ほけん」 (049/M-P), a Pokémon Tool from the same Gym promo pack as Krookodile ex. It was reported under the name “Adversity Insurance” when first revealed, so older articles may list it under that name.

English-language articles sometimes present these as “English exclusives”, but the accurate description is “not in Ninja Spinner — sourced from separate Japanese products and promos.” The “83 vs 86 main-set cards” gap mentioned earlier is exactly these three additions (83 + 3 = 86; the Fennekin illustration rare is a secret-slot card, so it doesn’t affect the main-set count).

The distinction matters for how you buy. The Japanese acquisition route for each:

Mega Gallade ex comes in the standalone product “Special Card Set: Mega Gallade ex”. That product went through a lottery sale at Pokémon Center Online, so getting it new at MSRP is not easy. Realistically, you’ll be hunting the set or the single card on marketplaces and at card shops. In English Chaos Rising it’s an ordinary Double Rare slot (#048), so the card occupies a different position in each market — “promo treatment in Japanese, regular slot in English” — which is its own kind of collector’s curiosity.

Krookodile ex and Adversity Policy come from promo card packs handed out at Pokémon Card Gym events (organized play at licensed stores). Gym promos don’t come out of regular pack products, so in Japan the realistic route is hunting singles on the secondary market. Distribution promos circulate only as widely as they were handed out, and condition varies a lot — inspect carefully before buying.

So these three are simultaneously “cards that might fall out of any English pack” and “cards you target through their source products in Japan”. Which route makes sense depends on which language you collect.

D. US and Japanese Prices, Side by Side

Both markets’ selling prices are in the table at the top. One thing stands out: Mega Greninja ex’s top rarity. The Japanese print is MUR ¥74,800; the English print is MHR $152.14. For the Japanese print, there are also observed reports of about one per 50 boxes (not an official figure).

The other thing worth knowing is the trajectory of the English market. The same price guide’s launch-period article (May 2026) recorded Mega Greninja ex SIR at $583.33 and the MHR at $399.99. Today they sit at $154.79 and $152.14.

The conclusion is simple: put the US and Japanese price of each card side by side, convert at the exchange rate at your time of purchase, and decide from there. Don’t bring assumptions like “the Japanese print is always cheaper” into this set.

Which Version Should You Buy?

Given the mapping and the prices, three rules of thumb:

1. Decide your collection’s language first. If you commit to Japanese prints, the yen prices in the table are your budget guide as-is. The artwork is identical across languages (numbering and rarity labels are separate systems), so if the illustrations are what you’re collecting for, going all-Japanese is a solid choice.

2. For the top rarities, always check both markets. MUR/MHR-tier selling prices are in the table. Don’t buy without looking at the numbers. At this price level, exchange rates also start to matter.

3. The three added cards and the Fennekin IR have different routes depending on which version you collect. An English-set collector can finish inside Chaos Rising packs and singles (plus the ETB for the Fennekin IR). But to assemble the Japanese equivalents of those four cards, you’ll be hunting outside Ninja Spinner — the Special Card Set, Gym promos, and Ninja Spinner’s secret slot — one by one. Plan those acquisitions first and you won’t scramble later.

Buying Ninja Spinner Cards from Japan

Practical notes for going after the Japanese prints.

Where they’re sold: Japanese singles mostly circulate on marketplace apps like Mercari and on card shops’ online stores. Marketplaces have more listings and stronger price competition, but condition descriptions are up to each seller. Card shops assess condition more consistently and price slightly above market for it. The standard split: shops for expensive cards, marketplaces for the mid-to-low tier.

Search keywords: Examples for searching in Japanese:

The set: 「ニンジャスピナー」 (Ninja Spinner), 「M4」

Single cards: 「メガゲッコウガex SAR」, 「メガゲッコウガex MUR」, 「チラチーノex SAR」, 「メガフラエッテex SAR」, and so on

The source product for the added cards: 「スペシャルカードセット メガエルレイドex」

Searching with English names or English rarity labels like SIR and MHR will surface almost no Japanese listings. The golden rule: search with the Japanese name and the Japanese rarity label.

Check the card number: Japanese cards have “/083” as the denominator (e.g. 114/083). English cards (/086) appear in the same searches, and marketplace titles often list “Chaos Rising” and 「ニンジャスピナー」 side by side — confirming the number in the photos is the reliable way.

Condition and authenticity: For expensive cards especially, photo-based condition checks and seller ratings are non-negotiable. Be wary of listings far below market. We cover how to spot fake cards and scams in a separate article — worth a read before chasing the top-end cards.

Buying through Neokyo: Most Japanese marketplaces and shop sites don’t ship internationally. A proxy purchasing service like Neokyo lets you buy those Japanese listings as-is and forward them overseas. The flow is simple: submit a purchase request from the item’s URL, Neokyo buys it on your behalf, receives it at a warehouse in Japan, and ships it to your address. Cards bought from multiple sellers can be combined into a single parcel — which makes the service a particularly good fit for collecting single cards in quantity. That goes for Ninja Spinner singles and Japan-only products like the Special Card Set alike.

FAQ

Q. Are Chaos Rising and Ninja Spinner the same set?

A. Almost, but not exactly. Chaos Rising builds on Ninja Spinner, adds three cards sourced from separate Japanese products and promos (Mega Gallade ex among them), and moves the Fennekin illustration rare out of the set into the ETB promo slot.

Q. What’s the most expensive card?

A. In English, Mega Greninja ex SIR (#116) at $154.79 (as of September 28, 2026); in Japanese, メガゲッコウガex MUR (120/083) at ¥74,800 (as of September 29, 2026). The top card being a different rarity in each language is one of this set’s quirks.

Q. Are the Japanese prints cheaper?

A. It depends on the card. Take both prices from the table and convert at the exchange rate at your time of purchase.

Q. I collect Japanese — how do I get Mega Gallade ex?

A. It doesn’t come out of Ninja Spinner packs. Look for the single card or the complete “Special Card Set: Mega Gallade ex.”

Q. Does the Fennekin illustration rare come out of packs?

A. Not from English Chaos Rising packs — the illustration rare version is the Elite Trainer Box promo (the regular-rarity Fennekin is in English packs as usual). In the Japanese Ninja Spinner it is pack-pulled, so hunting the Japanese single is the shortcut.

Summary

The top chase cards are Mega Greninja ex’s SIR and MHR, currently at nearly the same price; the English market has fallen sharply since launch

The Ninja Spinner mapping is “almost 1:1, with exceptions” — the Fennekin illustration rare’s changed inclusion, and three cards sourced from separate Japanese products and promos (Mega Gallade ex, Krookodile ex, Adversity Policy)

Search the Japanese market with the Japanese card name + rarity label (SAR/MUR) + card number (/083)

Any Japanese listing you find can be bought as-is through Neokyo’s proxy purchasing service.

[Search on Neokyo]

A sealed Japanese “Ninja Spinner” booster box.
