Japanese boxes pull from a different card list, so the pull rates above don’t apply to them.

Product

Packs per box

Cards per pack

Cards per box

Price

English booster display box

36

10

360

about $390

Glory of Team Rocket box

30

5

150

about ¥21,300–¥28,800

One caveat runs through all of these figures. The comparison is close, but not apples to apples: the English prices are Near Mint market prices on TCGplayer, while the Japanese ones come from used copies listed on Suruga-ya. Every price here covers the card only, with no fees, shipping, sales tax, or duty. The import section below covers what buying from Japan adds.

What Changes If You Buy the Japanese Version

Japanese cards are the same standard size as English cards, so your existing sleeves and binders fit. The backs are different: Japanese cards have a gold border with a multicolored design, while English cards have a navy-blue border with a white swirl.

Competitive play is where the difference shows. Play! Pokémon sets legal card languages by rating zone, and English is the only language listed for North America at Championship Series events; Japanese isn’t listed for any zone. Other tournaments and League sessions are left to the organizer’s discretion, and the World and International Championships allow any language that’s legal in the player’s home country.

You can get either version graded. CGC grades standard-sized Pokémon cards in all languages. PSA’s service tiers are based on declared value, not language, and its catalog lists Japanese Pokémon sets separately.

Selling later is the harder part. With only a seller or two per Japanese card on TCGplayer, and none for some, the resale market for Japanese copies in the United States appears far smaller than the market for English ones.

How to Order Destined Rivals Chase Cards from Japan

Ordering from Japan runs through a proxy service, which adds a step you wouldn’t deal with when buying domestically. The sequence is short. The sections below cover the proxy service, searching, and the costs to add up before you order.

Find the card and which Japanese set it’s from.

Search the Japanese marketplaces in English.

Add up the fees, shipping, and duty, and compare the total with what you’d save.

Place the order through a proxy service and have the parcel forwarded.

Have a Proxy Service Buy and Ship It

Many Japanese marketplaces don’t ship internationally, which is where a proxy service comes in. The service places the order for you, receives the parcel in Japan, and forwards it overseas. Neokyo runs a Pokémon TCG page that collects listings across Japanese marketplaces by set.

Search Japanese Marketplaces for the Card or Sealed Box

You’ll find Japanese singles and sealed boxes on marketplaces like Suruga-ya, Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, and Rakuten. Neokyo’s search box translates English into Japanese automatically, so you can type the English card name and let the site handle the rest.

Condition wording is where Japanese listings need a second look. Suruga-ya’s own stock is listed simply as used, while marketplace sellers add their own wording, from B-rank (playable, with noticeable wear) through free-text notes to graded slabs. Read the condition line before you buy.

What It Costs to Import

Cost

Amount

Source

Service fee

¥350 per item

Neokyo

Packing

¥500 up to 2 kg, plus ¥150 per extra kg

Neokyo

Shipping

Carrier’s rate, based on destination and parcel size

Neokyo estimator

Storage

Free for 45 days

Neokyo

Import duty and taxes

Depend on the destination country

Your country’s customs authority

Neokyo charges a flat ¥350 service fee per item, applied once when several copies of the same card go into one buy request, and packing costs ¥500 up to 2 kilograms plus ¥150 for each additional kilogram. Neokyo passes the carrier’s rate through with no markup, and its shipping estimator, which needs no account, quotes the rate for your own address, parcel size, and carrier. Storage is free for the first 45 days.

Import duty and taxes depend on the destination country and aren’t included in any of the prices in this guide. Check what applies where you live before you order.

Shipping is charged per parcel rather than per card, so if you order just one card, it bears the full shipping cost. A sealed box is heavy enough to raise both packing and shipping costs, so the comparison below covers single cards only.

Which Cards Are Worth Importing

Card (English number)

English market price

Japanese price plus service fee

Savings before shipping and duty (rounded)

Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex 231/182

$428.32

$364

+$65

Team Rocket’s Nidoking ex 233/182

$91.59

$35

+$57

Cynthia’s Garchomp ex 232/182

$220.87

$175

+$46

Team Rocket’s Crobat ex 234/182

$61.02

$29

+$32

Misty’s Psyduck 193/182

$57.12

$27

+$30

Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex 240/182

$55.74

$36

+$19

Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex 230/182

$150.06

$136

+$14

Team Rocket’s Moltres ex 229/182

$92.91

$82

+$11

Ethan’s Adventure 236/182

$34.73

$31

+$4

Cynthia’s Garchomp ex 241/182

$30.55

$34

−$3

Japanese prices from Suruga-ya, September 22, 2026, converted at ¥157.23 per dollar, plus Neokyo’s ¥350 service fee. Shipping and duty aren’t included; duty, where it applies, is charged on the declared value, so it cuts deeper into the savings on expensive cards. Differences of about $10 or less fall within the typical price gap between Near Mint and used copies.

Rounded to the dollar, the savings range from $65 on Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex 231/182 down to −$3. As noted under the table, anything within about $10 is too close to call, which leaves Ethan’s Adventure 236/182 and Cynthia’s Garchomp ex 241/182 as cards to buy in English. The other eight come out ahead before shipping and duty, followed by Nidoking ex at $57 and Cynthia’s Garchomp ex 232/182 at $46.

Shipping is charged per parcel, so a card with only small savings rarely covers it on its own. Add up the savings for the cards you were going to buy anyway, compare the total with the shipping quote for your address, and if it comes out ahead, send them together in one parcel. The card number and rarity symbol tell you which version you’re holding, and pulling one specific card takes eight to 29 boxes on average depending on rarity, so the single is the cheaper route for every card here.

A Japanese card isn’t legal at North American Championship Series events and has far fewer buyers in the United States, which makes it a better fit for a collection than for a deck or a quick resale.
